CNBC AI News, July 14 — Tesla CEO Elon Musk has ignited the tech world with his latest bold prediction regarding the trajectory of artificial intelligence.
In a recent social media post, Musk stated that AI’s intelligence is accelerating at a breakneck pace. He projects that within a mere two years, AI will likely surpass the cognitive capabilities of any single human being. Furthermore, he estimates that in approximately five years, AI’s intelligence will exceed the collective intelligence of all humanity.
Musk clarified that while AI already demonstrates superior intellect compared to most individuals, it has yet to outstrip the smartest individual or a highly skilled team leveraging computational power – what he referred to as “a company.”
However, the exponential growth of AI suggests that this threshold will eventually be crossed. According to Musk’s calculations, AI’s intelligence level is increasing tenfold annually. Extrapolating this rate, he suggests its capabilities could surge by a factor of ten thousand, or even one hundred thousand, in just four years.
Musk’s forecast isn’t his first foray into audacious AI predictions. He has previously voiced concerns about the rapid advancement of AI in various forums. While acknowledging the conveniences AI brings, he has also cautioned about its potential risks.
