CNBC AI News, July 15 – Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has publicly refuted the conclusions of a recent MIT study, according to media reports.

The MIT research posited that frequent AI usage, such as relying on ChatGPT for essay writing, leads to a decline in cognitive abilities. This manifests as reduced brain activity, diminished neurological responses, impaired linguistic expression, behavioral regression, and ultimately, a tendency towards uncritical copying and pasting, indicating a lack of independent thought.

Huang, while admitting he hadn’t personally reviewed the report, unequivocally stated his disagreement. “I use AI every day, and I feel like my cognitive abilities are improving, not deteriorating,” he countered, offering himself as an example.

He emphasized that the key lies in the methodology of AI utilization. He doesn’t allow AI to replace critical thinking but instead views it as a powerful learning tool, enabling him to grasp complex concepts and tackle previously intractable problems.

Huang specifically noted that effective AI use isn’t about passively receiving information but rather engaging in an active thought process. He argued that the ability to formulate high-quality questions is itself a “higher-order cognitive skill.” “When I interact with AI, I am essentially asking questions constantly. To ask good questions, you have to think, analyze, and reason,” he explained.

He shared his own practical approach: not being satisfied with the initial AI response and instead pursuing further inquiries and cross-validating answers with other AI tools. “I often ask the first AI, ‘Is that the best answer you can come up with?’ Then I give the answer to another AI and have it evaluate the quality of the previous response.” He likened this process to “getting input from three different people,” believing it fosters critical thinking.

Therefore, Huang firmly believes that the correct application of AI not only avoids intellectual impairment but also enhances cognitive capabilities. He advised, “Everyone involved in these kinds of experiments should learn to critically examine the answers provided by AI.”

Addressing young professionals in the AI field, Huang offered his insights: “You must realize that AI is one of the most groundbreaking technologies in human history. Its emergence today, rather than decades ago, is not accidental.
