CNBC AI News, July 21st – Today, at a state council press conference focusing on completion of the 14th Five-Year Plan, China’s postal chief highlighted the nation’s dominant position in the global express delivery market.

State Post Bureau Director-General Zhao Chongjiu announced that China’s express delivery volume has held the top spot worldwide for the past 11 years, now processing over 500 million parcels daily. This staggering volume underscores the vital role of logistics in China’s booming e-commerce landscape and its overall economic activity.

Notably, in 2024, express delivery volume in central and western China saw year-over-year growth rates of 30% and 34% respectively, significantly outpacing the national average. This rapid expansion in less-developed regions suggests strategic investments in infrastructure and logistics are beginning to bear fruit and are leveling the economic playing field.

Zhao emphasized that the postal sector is a crucial element of the modern circulation system, contributing significantly to balanced urban and rural development.

Currently, China is actively strengthening its rural delivery logistics system, constructing a three-tiered network spanning counties, townships, and villages. The goal is to transform previously underserved rural areas into growth engines by resolving delivery bottlenecks, bridging the consumption gap between urban and rural residents and ultimately equalizing service expectations across the country.

Zhao further noted during a recent inspection trip, Xinjiang has now achieved universal free shipping for e-commerce orders, what he called a development of “great significance”.

“This allows more specialty agricultural products from Xinjiang to be sold nationwide, boosting rural industry development and increasing farmers’ incomes. Simultaneously, it also allows people of all ethnic groups in border regions to enjoy the freedom of online shopping, offering the same shopping experience as their urban counterparts.” This policy adjustment serves as a powerful tool for stimulating economic activity and driving consumption in the region.

The growth in the logistics sector has also created numerous local employment opportunities.

Zhao cited an example of the owner of a village comprehensive service station in Kashgar, who reported a stable income and improved quality of life due to offering express delivery services.
