- For the first time, a shipping line will collaborate with an energy provider to co-develop and jointly operate LNG bunkering facilities.
- The TotalEnergies-CMA CGM JV will offer a complete logistics service in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region.
- A 20,000 m³ LNG bunker vessel will be jointly deployed and operated by 2028.
- Under a new long-term agreement, TotalEnergies will supply CMA CGM up to 360,000 tons of LNG per year until 2040.
PARIS & MARSEILLE, France–TotalEnergies (Paris:TTE) (LSE:TTE) (NYSE:TTE), and CMA CGM Group, are forging a new 50/50 logistics joint venture, zeroing in on liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operations at the pivotal port of Rotterdam. Think of it as a Franco-French alliance designed to supercharge the energy transition in the maritime sector.
Fueling Europe’s LNG Expansion
The keystone of this JV? A brand-new, 20,000 cubic-meter LNG bunker vessel slated for Rotterdam by 2028. This isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about providing a seamless service. The CMA CGM-TotalEnergies partnership will streamline everything from reloading at Gate terminal facilities to delivering LNG bunker fuel to a spectrum of vessels navigating the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region, catering to CMA CGM’s fleet and other key shipping players.
This venture synergizes with TotalEnergies’ existing infrastructure within the ARA zone, specifically, the 18,600 m³ LNG bunker vessel Gas Agility, in operation since 2020.
The integration of the JV’s future LNG bunker vessel with the Gas Agility promises enhanced delivery precision and operational efficiency throughout the region – a power play in maritime logistics.
Securing a Long-Term LNG Lifeline
Supporting CMA CGM’s ambitious Net Zero Carbon goal by 2050, TotalEnergies will supply CMA CGM with a substantial commitment of up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually, running from 2028 through 2040. This ensures a reliable fuel supply for CMA CGM’s rapidly expanding dual-fuel LNG-powered fleet that’s projected to reach 123 vessels by 2029.
“We see this as more than just a partnership; it’s about propelling a greener future for maritime transport in a critical European port hub. LNG is the frontrunner in mitigating the environmental impact in the shipping sector today,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “This not only solidifies our standing in LNG bunkering but underscores the commitment of two French giants in championing the energy transition.”
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, echoes the importance of this collaboration. “For the first time, a shipping behemoth and an energy titan are joining forces to operate an LNG bunkering vessel together, right in the heart of Rotterdam. This is how we accelerate the decarbonization of global trade – through tangible, scalable solutions.”
Final regulatory approvals are pending, casting a slight shadow, but the deal is largely expected to proceed.
A History of Partnership
TotalEnergies and CMA CGM already have a proven track record in pioneering low-carbon marine solutions:
- 2017: A 10-year deal was inked, with TotalEnergies supplying 300,000 tons of LNG annually to CMA CGM in Rotterdam.
- 2019: Another 10-year agreement cemented TotalEnergies as the supplier of 250,000 tons of LNG annually to CMA CGM in Marseille Fos.
- 2020: The first LNG bunkering of a major CMA CGM vessel took place in Rotterdam, fueled by 17,300 m³ of LNG from TotalEnergies.
- 2021: The first LNG bunkering of a CMA CGM ship in France, in Dunkirk, with around 16,400 m³ supplied.
- 2022: Pioneering ship-to-containership LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Marseille Fos, involving approximately 6,000 m³ of LNG.
LNG’s Decarbonization Potential
LNG as a marine fuel offers immediate advantages, slashing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20% compared to traditional fuels. With bio or synthetic alternatives, reductions could leap to 67% and 85%, respectively. It also dramatically improves air quality, slashing nitrogen oxides (NOx) by up to 85% and nearly eliminating (99%) sulfur oxides (SOx) and fine particles. It is an immediate, viable pathway. TotalEnergies’ investments in LNG bunkering reflect its commitment to supporting shipping companies in fuel transition.
TotalEnergies: An LNG Powerhouse
Ranking as the world’s third-largest LNG player, TotalEnergies boasts a global portfolio of 40 Mt/y in 2024, underscored by interests in liquefaction plants across all continents. The company’s integrated positioning covers production, transportation, access to over 20 Mt/y of regasification capacity in Europe, trading, and LNG bunkering. TotalEnergies aims to boost natural gas to nearly 50% of its sales mix by 2030 to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate methane emissions, partnering with local firms to catalyze the shift from coal to natural gas.
CMA CGM: Setting Decarbonization Standards
CMA CGM is committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. Their strategy revolves around optimizing their fleet and operations, accelerating low-carbon fuel adoption, integrating energy-efficient technologies, and facilitating modal shifts. Significant investments have been made in next-gen vessels that run on alternative energies like LNG, biomethane, and, in the future, e-methane, and green methanol.
