Simba’s Brand “Cotton Secret” Sanitary Pads, Allegedly Carcinogenic, Sold $3.33 Billion

Cotton Secret, founded by Xinba and with $465M in sales, faces allegations of health risks. Reports link its sanitary napkins to thyroid cancer in over 30 women, with thiourea, a Group 3 carcinogen, found in samples. Cotton Secret insists its products meet national standards and that internal assessments show no health risks under normal use. Independent testing by regulatory bodies support the company’s claims of adherence to safety standards.

Reports surfaced this week alleging potential health risks associated with “Cotton Secret” sanitary napkins, a brand founded by Chinese livestreaming sensation Xinba. Industry insiders estimate that Cotton Secret has generated a staggering ¥3.33 billion (approximately $465 million USD) in cumulative sales over the past eight years.

The allegations stem from reports claiming that over 30 women who used Cotton Secret products have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Further compounding concerns, testing of ten samples reportedly revealed the presence of thiourea in seven of them. Thiourea, a sulfur-containing organic compound used in various industrial, agricultural, and pharmaceutical applications, is classified as a Group 3 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, indicating it is possibly carcinogenic to humans.

In response to the unfolding controversy surrounding the alleged presence of excessive thiourea in its sanitary napkins, Cotton Secret has issued an official statement via its Weibo account. The company maintains that all its products strictly adhere to relevant national laws, regulations, and standards, as verified by certified testing institutions.

Regarding consumer concerns about certain batches potentially containing thiourea, Cotton Secret emphasizes that it has treated the matter with the utmost seriousness. Samples have been promptly submitted to independent third-party testing facilities for further analysis. The company claims its internal safety assessment has concluded that under normal, reasonable, and foreseeable usage conditions, thiourea residue does not pose a potential risk to human health.

Moreover, the company stated it proactively sought an independent product sampling and inspection from the Market Supervision Administration of Chenghai District, Shantou City, where Cotton Secret’s manufacturing plant is located. The test results indicated that the products met the required standards, assuring consumers that they can continue to use Cotton Secret products with confidence.
