Rate Hike Driven by Over $40 Million in Infrastructure Investments

HONOLULU–Hawaii American Water customers in Hawaii Kai, Mauna Lani, and Waimea will soon see adjustments to their wastewater bills, following approval from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (HPUC).

The utility giant’s rate request, initially filed in August 2024, comes on the heels of a substantial $40 million investment in local infrastructure across its three service districts. The company cites aging infrastructure as a key driver for these upgrades. The new rates are designed to ensure continued safe and reliable service, adherence to increasingly stringent environmental regulations, and the support of ongoing improvements to vital treatment plants, collection systems and pump stations.

“Strategic infrastructure investments are crucial for us to maintain the quality and reliability of our wastewater services,” stated Lee Mansfield, Senior Manager Operations, Hawaii American Water. “Our measured approach to upgrades, coupled with diligent cost management, allows us to provide affordable and dependable service to our valued customers.”

The new rates are slated to take effect in early August 2025. Hawaii Kai residents can expect a monthly increase of approximately $4. Customers in Mauna Lani and Waimea will see a more significant adjustment of $18 to $25 per month. It’s worth noting that the previous rate adjustments for Mauna Lani and Waimea occurred in September 2003 and January 2011, respectively. Hawaii American Water last filed a rate case for the Hawaii Kai system in 2021.

Customers will receive detailed information about the new rates directly on their upcoming Hawaii American Water bills. Additional information will also be readily available on the company’s website under the Customer Service Billing section, specifically addressing Wastewater Rates.
