The remarks came during a widely circulated campus address where he urged China’s top engineering talent to join Huawei’s ambitious software endeavors.
“Creating an operating system is demanding, but not rocket science,” Yu stated in a video posted to his Weibo account. “The real Everest? Building a mature ecosystem. That requires not just core technological breakthroughs, but sustained innovation across industries.”
Emphasizing Huawei’s divergence from conventional pathways, Yu noted the company designed HarmonyOS as “a next-generation system from the ground up—not a me-too product chasing competitors.” The infrastructure-agnostic OS now powers over 800 million devices globally, from smartphones to smart cars.
In a lighthearted moment, the executive shared self-deprecating humor about his technical mindset: “I’m wired for circuit boards and algorithms. Hand me a philosophy thesis? I’d be a walking disaster in liberal arts.”
The 1988 valedictorian of Northwest Polytechnical University later joined Huawei in 1993, spearheading breakthroughs including the company’s first GSM patents. His team’s work laid foundations for Huawei’s expansion into telecom infrastructure and consumer electronics.
Yu closed with a recruitment pitch to Tsinghua graduates: “We need brilliant minds to reinvent OS development. This isn’t just about code—it’s about architecting the digital bedrock for intelligent industries.”
