CNBC AI News, July 29th – Seres Group is making headlines after its Vice President, Kang Bo, shared details of the industry’s first documented satellite-enabled roadside rescue, involving their AITO M9 SUV.
The incident occurred when an AITO M9 driver suffered a tire blowout in a remote, signal-devoid area near Delingha, Qinghai. With no cellular service available for either the driver’s mobile phone or the vehicle’s infotainment system, the situation looked dire. However, the M9 comes standard with integrated China Telecom satellite connectivity, enabling the driver to make a one-button satellite call to the automaker’s roadside assistance center, transmitting precise GPS coordinates.
The call center responded swiftly. A rescue team navigated treacherous terrain, crossing three mountains over 3.5 hours to reach the stranded motorist. Throughout the journey, the driver and the rescue team maintained communication via satellite phone for a total of 61 minutes. After nearly eight hours, the team successfully repaired the vehicle and safely transported the occupants back to civilization.
Li Xiaolong, CTO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, amplified the story, posting, “If your car doesn’t have satellite communication, buy a phone that does. It could save your life.”
Li further elaborated in the comments, stating: “It really can save your life. Yesterday, I was trapped in a village in Huairou. The only device that could make a satellite call was a P70 Pro. It not only promptly reported the emergency to the emergency response headquarters but also allowed villagers and tourists to reassure their families.”
This rescue highlights the increasing importance of satellite connectivity in consumer vehicles, particularly in regions with limited or non-existent cellular infrastructure. Huawei’s P70 series offers similar capabilities, albeit through different satellite systems. The standard P70 model is equipped with Beidou satellite messaging, enabling users to send text messages and location information (with a positioning accuracy of less than 10 meters) in emergency situations where terrestrial networks are unavailable.
The Pro and Art versions (P70 Pro and P70 Art) take it a step further, featuring both Beidou satellite messaging and Tiantong-1 satellite calling, enabling voice communication in areas without cellular coverage. These features are particularly well-suited for outdoor adventures and emergency rescue scenarios.
