CNBC AI News, August 1st – WeChat users may have noticed a subtle but significant change: the fee structure for cash withdrawals from their digital wallets has been tweaked.
Recent online chatter highlighted the fact that the minimum threshold for WeChat withdrawal fees has been lowered to a mere 0.01 yuan (approximately $0.0014 USD).
腾讯客服 confirmed this change, stating that a full system update was implemented on July 25th. This update dictates that if the computed service fee falls below 0.01 yuan, the fee will be rounded up to this minimum amount.
Previously, the “WeChat Balance” description outlined a lifetime allowance of 1,000 yuan for fee-free withdrawals, applicable to each user, identified by a single ID. Beyond this threshold, a service fee of 0.1% (0.001) was levied on the withdrawal amount, with a previous minimum charge of 0.1 yuan per transaction.
According to WeChat’s updated FAQ on the WeChat Customer Service mini-program, effective March 1, 2016, accounts registered under the same identity (ID card, passport, etc.) share a cumulative 1,000 yuan quota for fee-free withdrawals.
Once this quota is exceeded, a 0.1% service fee is applied to each withdrawal. However, in a user-friendly adjustment, if the calculated fee is less than 0.01 yuan, it will be levied at 0.01 yuan. Furthermore, withdrawals from a WeChat Balance of 0.01 yuan or less are exempt from service fees altogether, a welcome change for users managing smaller digital balances.
