CNBC AI News, August 2, 2023 – Earlier this year, the story of a 30-year-old woman from Qingdao, China, purchasing a 700,000-square-meter island in Japan sparked widespread interest. Now, CNBC investigates: what’s the status of this island acquisition?
According to reports from Chinese media, Zhang Shuqing, a native of Qingdao who grew up by the sea, along with her family, acquired Ie Island (formally known as Okinawajima’s largest uninhabited island) in Okinawa, Japan, in December 2020. The full transfer of ownership was completed on February 2, 2021.
Zhang Shuqing shared insights in an interview, revealing that there are currently no firm development plans for the island. With her children growing up, she is considering leaving the island as a legacy for future generations. A landing strip is under construction to facilitate company retreats. This strategic move hints at potential future business expansion, perhaps leveraging the island’s unique location for enhanced employee experience or even niche tourism ventures.
“The island has a relatively flat terrain, and it is home to wild goats. Many people visit the nearby waters for diving and camping every year. The sea water is incredibly clear, and there’s a particularly healing feeling on the island. Everyone is welcome to visit,” Zhang stated.
Ie Island, located northwest of Okinawa’s main island, spans approximately 700,000 square meters, making it the largest uninhabited island in the Okinawa region. Historically, the island was inhabited and mined for Ryukyu limestone. Remnants of houses and wells stand as historical testaments to its past use.
Its proximity to Izenajima and surrounding coral reefs enhance its appeal. Moreover, the island is located approximately 700 kilometers from mainland China making it a strategic location in the East China Sea.
