Intel Shake-Up: Three Foundry Executives Set to Retire

CNBC AI News, August 3rd – Intel’s foundry ambitions are facing a potential reshuffle, as three key executives within its manufacturing operations are reportedly set to retire. The departures are expected to have a significant impact on the internal structure of the burgeoning Intel Foundry Services (IFS).

Since taking the helm, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has initiated a series of sweeping changes within the chip giant. Just last month, Intel informed employees that Kaizad Mistry and Ryan Russell, both Corporate Vice Presidents within the Technology Development Group (TDG), will be retiring.

Adding to the executive exits, Gary Patton, Corporate Vice President of Design Technology Platform, is also slated to retire. Patton, a veteran with substantial experience at IBM and GlobalFoundries, is a highly respected figure in the semiconductor industry.

Mistry and Russell have been deeply involved in Intel’s process technology development for years, overseeing critical functions within the TDG, including supervising ongoing development projects and formulating technology development strategies. Their departures leave a gap in the institutional knowledge of Intel’s manufacturing roadmap.

Patton’s role focused on providing comprehensive design platform solutions for foundry clients. This encompassed process design kit (PDK) development, EDA tool support and validation, IP library creation, and the establishment of design rules. His primary objective was to ensure that customer designs could seamlessly utilize Intel’s manufacturing processes, meeting performance and power requirements while achieving high-yielding mass production. This is particularly crucial as Intel aims to attract external customers to its foundry business and compete with giants like TSMC and Samsung.

Before joining Intel, Patton spent five years at GlobalFoundries and two decades at IBM.

Sources familiar with the matter also indicate that Intel is reviewing the structure of its technology development division, which is responsible for defining manufacturing processes. Reportedly, Intel plans to streamline its capacity planning team and reduce headcount within certain engineering teams. This move suggests a possible shift in strategy, potentially focusing on greater efficiency and resource allocation within its manufacturing operations.

Intel declined to comment further on the reported departures and restructuring.
