Reports are surfacing that the “JiuGui·Freedom Love” baijiu, sold at the popular Chinese supermarket chain Pang Dong Lai, is becoming a sought-after item for scalpers.
This special edition baijiu, packaged in a distinctive sack-like container, features a competitive price point. Each bottle contains 550ml and retails for around 200 yuan. A carton of six bottles sells for 1200 yuan, yielding a gross profit margin of approximately 15.87% per bottle.
According to one scalper, a carton of “JiuGui·Freedom Love” is being offered for sale online for an additional 150 yuan including shipping. Opting out of free shipping only reduces the markup to 110 yuan, a reflection of the challenges in securing the product due to purchase limits imposed by Pang Dong Lai, which often necessitates sourcing from multiple individuals.
The “JiuGui·Freedom Love” is a collaborative effort between JiuGui Liquor Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of COFCO (China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation), and the popular retailer Pang Dong Lai.
Official statements describe the baijiu as being crafted using JiuGui’s premium aged baijiu (over 5 years) and blended with rare 10-year aged reserves. The distillation process consists of 173 intricate steps, resulting in a spirit characterized by its rich, multi-layered aromatic profile and a smooth, sweet initial taste followed by a clean, lingering finish, typical of the “馥郁” (Fu Yu, which translates to rich aroma) style of baijiu.
The baijiu has seen considerable success through Pang Dong Lai’s 13 brick-and-mortar stores, along with online sales via its official mini-program and Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) platform.
