Shanxi Authorities Detain Driver in Road Rage Incident Caught on Video
August 7th – A road rage incident in Shanxi Province, China, involving a driver with visible tattoos reacting to being denied a merge, has gone viral, prompting a swift response from local authorities. According to a statement released by the Public Security Bureau of Lingchuan County, an investigation was immediately launched.
The incident, which occurred on August 5th around 2:00 PM, involved a driver identified as Wang Mouxin, a 27-year-old tourist from another province. Wang, behind the wheel of a black Audi sedan purchased just days prior (July 31st) and bearing a temporary license plate (豫A****0 valid until August 6th), attempted to overtake a Mercedes-Benz near Shuangdi Village in Ma Ge Dang Township. The maneuver was initially unsuccessful due to oncoming traffic.
Police reports state that Wang then proceeded to forcibly overtake the Mercedes. Reaching a junction ahead, he exited his vehicle and, upon seeing the Mercedes pass, allegedly threw a betel nut in its direction before verbally abusing the driver and pounding on the car windows. Reportedly, neither party reported the incident at the time.
Lingchuan police have now taken action. “Wang Mouxin is currently under administrative detention for suspected disorderly conduct,” the statement reads. In addition to the detention, Wang received a warning for failing to properly display the temporary license plate on his vehicle’s windshield. Furthermore, he was penalized with a deduction of 3 points from his driving record and a fine of 200 yuan (~$28 USD) for the illegal overtaking maneuver, a common traffic penalty in China.
