WeChat Warns of Increased Account Hacking: Multiple Users Affected

WeChat has issued a security alert regarding a surge in account hijackings targeting Official Account users. Attackers are reportedly compromising corporate registration information, including legal representative details, to gain unauthorized account access. WeChat has suspended the “account recovery via legal representative information” feature for vulnerable accounts and is notifying users of potential compromises. Users are advised to monitor their corporate registrations and report suspicious activity to local authorities. WeChat is committed to enhancing risk management and collaborating with authorities to combat these threats.

CNBC AI News, August 7th – WeChat’s Official Accounts platform has issued a security alert concerning a recent uptick in account hijacking activities orchestrated by malicious actors.

The alert highlights a disturbing trend: a number of Official Account users have reported that the corporate entities used to register their accounts have been compromised. Critically, these users allege that their corporate legal representative (法人) information and other vital details have been altered without their consent or knowledge.

WeChat is actively working to mitigate the risks associated with this fraudulent activity, aiming to prevent bad actors from exploiting the manipulated information to gain unauthorized access to and control over user accounts.

In a proactive move, WeChat stated that it has temporarily suspended the “account recovery via legal representative information” feature for accounts flagged as potentially vulnerable. This measure has already proven effective, with WeChat claiming to have successfully protected numerous accounts belonging to entities whose legal representative information had been tampered with.

Furthermore, WeChat is proactively notifying users whose accounts exhibit characteristics suggestive of compromise, urging them to carefully monitor their corporate registrations for any unauthorized changes.

WeChat advises all platform operators to closely monitor their corporate information for any discrepancies. Should suspicious activity be detected, users are encouraged to promptly contact the relevant local authorities.

WeChat affirmed its commitment to continuously refining its risk management strategies, fostering closer collaboration with relevant authorities to address emerging threats, and diligently reporting any detected issues. This coordinated effort aims to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of account operators and to preserve a healthy and transparent ecosystem for WeChat’s Official Account platform.
