Haier Pioneers Static Air Levitation Technology, Achieving Unprecedented Production Capacity

Haier has launched a static pressure air-bearing compressor, demonstrating its leadership in oil-free technology and advancing the industry towards scaled applications. This technology offers over 50% energy savings compared to traditional compressors and is protected by numerous patents. Following its success with magnetic levitation chillers, Haier aims to replicate that growth in the air-bearing chiller market, which benefits from a strong focus on green transformation. An industry alliance has been formed to accelerate the adoption of air-bearing technology.

As the global low-carbon transition accelerates, breakthroughs in core technologies and their scaled deployment are critical drivers of industry advancement.

On August 8th, a brand-new Haier static pressure air-bearing compressor rolled off the production line at its manufacturing base in Zhejiang, China. This event marks a pivotal moment, signifying the industry’s capacity to reach large-scale applications.

This product rollout underscores Haier’s persistent leadership in oil-free technology. Having already secured the top global market share for magnetic levitation (maglev) chillers, Haier has now pioneered static pressure air-bearing technology and is driving its mass production. This “dual-technology approach” solidifies its position at the forefront of the industry.

The growing interest in air-bearing chillers stems from their significant energy-saving capabilities. Dr. Gu Fahua, the founder of Haier’s air-bearing compressor technology, explained that, compared to dynamic pressure air-bearing technology, static pressure air-bearing offers enhanced stability. It completely eliminates rotor mechanical friction losses, resulting in energy savings exceeding 50% compared to traditional compressors. The technology is protected by dozens of international patents.

Xu Wei, a National Engineering Survey and Design Master and Chief Scientist at the China Academy of Building Research said that the application areas for air-bearing chillers are continuously expanding, with widespread adoption in the precision manufacturing sector. Haier has set a commendable example for the industry, from initial innovation to driving market adoption.

The maturity and breakthroughs in this technology path recall the early development of maglev chillers. In 2006, China’s first maglev chiller was created at Haier. After a decade of market cultivation, it hit an inflection point. Haier’s global leadership, boasting seven consecutive years at the top and commanding 50% of the Chinese market, stands as a testament to this technological marathon.

Now, Haier is replicating its maglev success in the air-bearing arena. From an industry perspective, air-bearing chillers today mirror maglev chillers a decade ago, poised for rapid growth. However, against the backdrop of green transformation and energy-saving upgrades, air-bearing technology benefits from a highly favorable macroeconomic environment and market opportunity.

During the event, the industry’s first air-bearing promotion alliance was also officially established. It is believed that with the large-scale participation of more manufacturers and users, air-bearing technology is expected to replicate or even surpass the growth curve of maglev, and the next large-scale breakthrough will be even faster.
