FAA Greenlights Halon-Free Fire Extinguisher Retrofit for Learjets
OLATHE, Kan., Aug. 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Avcon Industries, Inc., a subsidiary of Butler National Corporation (OTCQX: BUKS) specializing in aircraft modifications, and its affiliate Butler Avionics Inc. are taking aim at a burning issue in the aviation industry: aging fire extinguishers. The FAA has granted Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for Avcon’s non-halon portable fire extinguisher replacements across a broad range of Learjet models, from the classic 24 to the modern 75.
The FAA STC No. ST12087CH allows for the installation of Halotron BrX-filled extinguishers, a drop-in replacement designed to comply with stringent European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations. Avcon is currently seeking EASA validation for the STC. This move is crucial as the clock ticks down to the December 31, 2025, deadline for replacing halon extinguishers in airplane cabins and crew compartments, mandated by EU regulations and the Montreal Protocol due to halon’s ozone-depleting properties.
Halon, once a favored firefighting agent, has been blacklisted in the EU since 1994, with limited exceptions for “critical uses” like aviation. However, EASA is now pushing for a complete transition to environmentally friendly alternatives.
“Avcon and Butler Avionics partnered with a leading fire extinguisher specialist to proactively address the upcoming EASA mandate, securing STC approval for Learjet installations,” explained Patrick Hupp, Avionics Manager. “These new extinguishers are designed for easy installation in existing locations, with options for additional mounting in older Learjet models. We are actively pursuing EASA approval and expanding the STC’s applicability to more aircraft models. Our commitment remains steadfast in providing cost-effective, regulatory-compliant solutions for legacy aircraft.”
This isn’t just about regulatory compliance; it’s a strategic play in the lucrative market for aircraft maintenance and retrofits. By offering a readily available, FAA-approved solution, Avcon positions itself as a key player in helping Learjet operators navigate the evolving regulatory landscape and maintain the value of their aircraft.
