CNBC AI News – Beijing – August 27th – Meituan, the Chinese tech giant and on-demand delivery platform, recently hosted an open day in Beijing focused on co-governance of rider algorithms. A key announcement from the event: Meituan plans to eliminate late-delivery penalties for its crowdsourced riders by the end of 2025, according to the Head of Rider Experience Operations.
This move reflects a strategic shift towards using positive incentives rather than punitive measures, a concept Meituan has been exploring for some time. Over the past eight months, Meituan’s technology, product, service experience teams, and local station managers have collaborated on pilot programs across more than ten cities. These trials involved A/B testing different management approaches, with a focus on maintaining rider income and user satisfaction while simultaneously rewarding high-performing riders.
Early feedback from riders in regions like Guangxi and Jiangxi indicates an improved experience, particularly amongst new and part-time crowdsourced riders. The company revealed that it has largely finalized a new model based on a points-based system that replaces negative deductions. National rollout of this new system is expected soon.
“We’ve received feedback from riders that they no longer fear late-delivery deductions, giving them more peace of mind while on deliveries.” Meituan shared during the open day event.
Rider traffic safety is another area of intensive focus for Meituan this year. Since April, the company has been piloting a “Safety Score” system in over 100 cities nationwide. With guidance from traffic management authorities, the program incorporates traffic safety performance into rider evaluations, emphasizing positive reinforcement. Riders with a perfect record of avoiding red lights are eligible for a “Waiting for the Light” bonus.
According to Meituan’s internal data, the Safety Score system has resulted in a 26% decrease in rider red-light violations. To date, more than 20,000 riders in pilot cities have received immediate cash rewards as part of the program, incentivizing safer driving habits and contributing to a safer delivery ecosystem.
