Instagram’s user base has swelled to 3 billion monthly active users, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Wednesday. This milestone highlights the platform’s continued growth and engagement within the competitive social media landscape.
“What an incredible community we’ve built here,” Zuckerberg posted on his Instagram channel, acknowledging the significant achievement.
The 3 billion user mark is a substantial achievement for the photo-sharing app, which Meta acquired in 2012 for $1 billion. At the time, many questioned the valuation; however, Instagram’s subsequent growth has firmly cemented its position as a key asset within Meta’s portfolio.
Meta last provided specific user figures for Instagram in October 2022, when Zuckerberg indicated during an earnings call that the app had surpassed 2 billion monthly users. The current announcement signifies a 50% increase in user numbers in just under three years, demonstrating strong organic growth as well as the potential success of new features and engagement strategies.

With 3 billion monthly users, Instagram now aligns more closely with the established user bases of Facebook and WhatsApp, further consolidating Meta’s position as a dominant force in social networking and communication. The platform’s success can be attributed to a number of factors, including its visually-driven format, evolving features like Reels and Stories, and ongoing efforts to cater to a diverse range of user interests and demographics.
Zuckerberg stated in January that the Facebook app “is used by more than 3 billion monthly actives,” while in April, he noted that WhatsApp also boasted “more than 3 billion monthly actives.” The consistency across these key platforms highlights a robust user base and the synergistic benefits of Meta’s diversified app ecosystem.
