Pony.ai CEO cites Hong Kong’s proximity to China as a key factor. Both companies are also expanding robotaxi operations, partnering with Uber in the US and operating in Chinese cities.

Waymo is also extending its ride-hailing service in other U.S. metropolitan areas and broadening its San Francisco Bay Area service. Pony.ai is accelerating its Robotaxi ambitions, beginning public road testing of its seventh-generation autonomous vehicles in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, China. Built on GAC’s Aion V model, the Gen-7 system boasts automotive-grade components, reduced costs, and versatile design. With advanced sensors and the “PonyWorld” model, the company aims for full-scenario operation. Strategic partnerships and over 45 million kilometers of testing position Pony.ai for mass production and a fleet exceeding 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2025.

WeRide is expanding into Saudi Arabia, launching Robotaxis and other autonomous vehicle products in Riyadh and AlUla, with trial runs on Uber soon and full commercial services expected by late 2025. The move includes Robobuses and Robosweepers, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030. This strategic expansion builds upon WeRide’s existing Middle East presence and complements Uber’s global expansion. Key advantages are a multi-product strategy catering diverse needs and aligning with ambitious regional goals.
