LONDON – Large-area display shipments, exceeding 9 inches, are poised for a 2.8% year-over-year increase in 2025, according to a fresh analysis from Omdia. This growth trajectory occurs despite an expected downturn in the television and monitor sectors, buoyed instead by robust demand for mobile PC displays in notebooks and tablets.
The latest “Large-area display market tracker – 3Q25 with 2Q25 results” highlights a shifting landscape in display technology, where mobile computing and strategic market maneuvering are key drivers.
Mobile PC Display Powering Growth Amidst Market Softness
Omdia’s report projects a 2.2% year-over-year rise in large-area LCD unit shipments, reaching 873.9 million units in 2025. However, this overall growth masks a more nuanced reality. LCD TV and monitor displays are forecast to decline by 3.4% and 1.8% respectively. The slack is picked up by tablet and notebook PC LCD shipments which are forecast to surge by 17.5% and 4.2% respectively.
The OLED market is demonstrating even stronger growth potential, projecting a 19.0% year-over-year increase in unit shipments for 2025. Monitor and notebook PC OLEDs will be the vanguard, expected to jump by 60.9% and 45.9% respectively. While tablet PC OLED shipments are forecast to slightly decrease by 2.3% year-over-year, OLED TV displays are anticipated to gain, showing a 3.1% year-over-year increase.
“The display market is currently being shaped by distinct regional strategies,” says Peter Su, Principal Analyst at Omdia. “Chinese panel manufacturers aim to capture market share in IT displays through the expansion of new Gen 8.6 IPS LCD fabs, while other major players like LG Display and Sharp are prioritizing profitability through strategic restructuring. This divergence is shaping the cost structure and innovation focus within the LCD segment.”
Su further adds, “Concurrently, in the OLED arena, Korean manufacturers are actively expanding into IT applications like monitors and notebook PCs as a strategic move to counterbalance the comparatively weaker performance of OLED TVs. These manufacturers are capitalizing on their leading position in the high-end tablet market, with shipments to key clients like Apple and Samsung growing by 3.6%, even against an overall decline in the tablet OLED market.” This targeted expansion into IT applications is a key driver in maintaining market share amidst shifts in the broader electronics market.
