Russia’s Tunnel Idea to Musk: An ‘Interesting’ Pitch

A Russian envoy proposed a Russia-U.S. undersea rail tunnel, dubbed the ‘Putin-Trump tunnel,’ potentially involving Elon Musk’s Boring Company. Trump expressed interest, while Zelenskyy was reportedly displeased. The project faces skepticism due to enormous engineering challenges in the Bering Strait’s harsh conditions and The Boring Company’s limited experience in such environments. Geopolitical concerns arise from Musk’s existing ties with Russia, including Tesla’s aluminum supply and reported discussions with Putin.

President Donald Trump on Friday expressed cautious interest in a proposal floated by a Russian presidential envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, to construct an undersea rail tunnel connecting Russia and the U.S. via the Bering Strait. The suggestion, posted on social media platform X, envisions Elon Musk’s tunneling venture, The Boring Company, as a key partner in the ambitious infrastructure endeavor.

“That’s an interesting one,” Trump remarked when questioned about the proposed tunnel linking Russia to Alaska. “We’ll have to think about that. I hadn’t heard that.”

The response from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was less enthusiastic, reportedly stating he was “not happy” with the concept following Trump’s initial openness.

Dmitriev, a prominent figure heading Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, portrayed the 70-mile link as “symbolizing unity.” He also suggested that Moscow would partially finance the project.

Traditional cost estimates for such a tunnel typically reach around $65 billion. However, Dmitriev asserted that The Boring Company’s innovative tunneling technology could potentially slash expenses to $8 billion and expedite completion within an eight-year timeframe. “Let’s build a future together!” Dmitriev proclaimed.

Dmitriev’s unsolicited proposal follows a call between Putin and Trump on Thursday, ostensibly to discuss avenues for resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to reports, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior advisors are scheduled to meet with a Russian delegation next week, preceding a planned summit between Trump and Putin in Budapest, Hungary.

As of press time, Musk had not issued a formal response to the tunnel proposal.

However, industry analysts express considerable skepticism about the project’s feasibility. Constructing an undersea tunnel in the Bering Strait presents formidable engineering challenges, including navigating sub-freezing temperatures, a scarcity of existing infrastructure, and a region prone to significant seismic activity.

The Boring Company’s operational history further fuels doubts. The company’s prior tunneling projects have been conducted in relatively benign environments, characterized by warm, arid climates and readily available infrastructure.

Adding to the scrutiny, The Boring Company recently faced regulatory repercussions in Nevada, receiving a citation and fine from environmental authorities for a series of alleged violations, according to reporting by ProPublica. The alleged infractions included unauthorized digging activities, the release of untreated water onto public streets, and improper waste disposal.

The Boring Company is currently engaged in the Music City Loop project in Nashville, Tennessee, a 10-mile tunnel intended to connect downtown Nashville to its airport. The project has met local resistance, partially attributed to concerns about inadequate planning in the city’s flood-prone areas prior to the project’s authorization.

Beyond the technical hurdles, potential geopolitical ramifications are also under examination. Musk’s electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla, maintains existing supply chain connections with Russia.

Specifically, Tesla has acquired aluminum from Rusal, a company founded by sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

Furthermore, reports surfaced in the Wall Street Journal in October 2024 suggesting that Musk held undisclosed conversations with Putin in 2022.

One instance cited in the report alleged that Putin pressured Musk to restrict SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service in Taiwan, purportedly as a favor to Chinese President Xi Jinping. Notably, Beijing remains a crucial strategic ally of the Kremlin.

These reported interactions between Musk and Putin, a former KGB operative, occurred during Musk’s leveraged buyout and subsequent takeover of Twitter, rebranded as X.

Despite these potential conflicts, SpaceX, under Musk’s leadership, has also collaborated with NASA to transport Russian cosmonauts to the International Space Station.
