Northstar Clean Technologies Opens Asphalt Shingle Reprocessing Facility, Secures Calgary Contract
CALGARY, Alberta – Northstar Clean Technologies Inc. (TSXV: ROOF, OTCQB: ROOOF) has officially launched its first commercial asphalt shingle reprocessing facility in Calgary and secured a significant five-year contract with the City of Calgary. The agreement, set to commence in April 2026, positions Northstar as a key player in the city’s revamped Shingles Recycling Program.
Under the terms of the contract, Northstar’s Empower Calgary Facility will process all asphalt shingles collected from the City’s Spy Hill, East Calgary, and Shepard Waste Management Facilities. This partnership aims to divert thousands of tonnes of construction materials from Calgary landfills annually.
The City and Northstar will collaborate on the collection, inspection, screening, and contaminant removal of the discarded shingles to ensure operational efficiency. While specific volume targets and financial details remain confidential, the collaboration signals a proactive approach to meeting Calgary’s waste diversion goals and a step towards a circular economy.
This new agreement complements Northstar’s existing supply agreements with IKO Industries Ltd and Ecco Recycling & Energy Corporation, securing significant feedstock for the Empower Calgary Facility. This is notable because it creates a circular economy solution that takes waste shingles and reprocesses them into reusable industrial products and can act as a blueprint for other major cities across North America.
Aidan Mills, President & CEO of Northstar, noted that the agreement validates the economic viability of asphalt shingle reprocessing and aligns with landfill diversion objectives set by municipalities. “We are very appreciative of the City of Calgary’s confidence in Northstar selecting our Company and our proprietary solution as the winning candidate under their request for proposal for waste shingle land diversion. We believe this is the beginning of a long-standing relationship with the City. With supply under the Contract, together with supply from IKO and Ecco, we have secured more feedstock than required for the Facility to operate on a single shift basis and process 40,000 tonnes per year. The Contract is in line with our strategy to access feedstock supply and divert waste shingles from municipal landfills and we look forward to engaging on and structuring similar arrangements with other municipalities across North America as part of our expansion efforts.”
The grand opening of the Empower Calgary Facility, which is located just outside of Calgary in Rocky View County, also took place today. It is believed to be one of the first commercial asphalt shingle recovery and reprocessing facilities in North America with commercial scale applications. This marks Canada’s first company to design, build, and operate a commercial-scale facility solely focused on reprocessing asphalt shingles into reusable, market-quality products.
Technological Advantage & Environmental Impact
The Empower Calgary Facility leverages Northstar’s patented Bitumen Extraction & Separation Technology (BEST). The facility can process up to 80,000 tonnes of discarded shingles annually. This process recovers liquid asphalt, aggregate, fibre, and limestone, to be reused in new paving, roofing, and construction applications. Northstar reports this facility offers a reduction in lifecycle CO₂ emissions by approximately 60 per cent. The recovered asphalt should also reduce reliance on the crude oil supply chain, helping insulate the asphalt supply chain from geopolitical and economic headwinds.
Alberta’s Circular Economy & Investment
The facility, developed in partnership with Alberta-based engineering, design, and construction firms, will employ up to 30 full-time local staff. It received support from Emissions Reduction Alberta (“ERA”) and Alberta Innovates, totaling over $7.2 million, which helped Northstar’s technology to scale from a pilot project to a commercial facility. According to Justin Riemer, CEO of ERA, “We saw this as a flagship investment in Alberta’s circular economy — a proven technology that cuts emissions, diverts waste and positions the Province as a leader in shingle recycling,”
Looking Ahead
Northstar’s model provides a scalable solution for municipalities and industrial clients seeking to improve waste diversion, emissions, and overall sustainability. Alberta MLA Chantelle de Jonge stated, “Alberta is once again proving that environmental responsibility and economic opportunity go hand in hand,”
The company is aligning with Canada’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan and net-zero by 2050 targets. Northstar reports this initiative will deliver measurable greenhouse gas reductions, landfill diversion, and industrial decarbonization outcomes. The expansion of this technology could significantly contribute to these goals.
About Northstar
Northstar is a Canadian waste to value technology company focused on the sustainable recovery and reprocessing of asphalt shingles. Northstar developed and owns a proprietary design process for taking discarded asphalt shingles, otherwise destined for already over-crowded landfills, and extracts the liquid asphalt for use in new hot mix asphalt shingle manufacturing and asphalt flat roof systems while also extracting aggregate and fiber for use in construction products and other industrial applications. Focused on the circular economy, Northstar plans to reprocess used or defective asphalt shingle waste back into its three primary components for reuse/resale with its first commercial scale up facility in Calgary, Alberta. As an emerging innovator in sustainable processing, Northstar’s mission aims at leading the recovery and reprocessing of asphalt shingles in North America that would otherwise be sent to landfill addressing numerous stakeholder objectives.
