LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels facility has commenced full operations, marking a significant milestone in the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
SKOKIE, Ill., Nov. 13, 2025 — LanzaTech Global, Inc. (NASDAQ: LNZA), a prominent player in carbon recycling technology, has announced that LanzaJet, Inc., is now fully operational at its Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Soperton, Georgia. This plant represents the world’s first commercial-scale production of jet fuel utilizing ethanol as a primary feedstock, offering a renewable solution that is compatible with existing aircraft without relying on traditional lipids or oils.
Recognizing the potential of ethanol-to-jet technology, LanzaTech strategically spun out LanzaJet, accelerating its development and commercial scaling. This move created a strategic advantage. Despite the challenges faced by the aviation sector, early investors recognized the long-term potential of this technology. Their foresight and commitment have been essential in establishing the foundation for next-generation aviation fuels, with ethanol playing a pivotal role.
The Freedom Pines Fuels plant demonstrates that ethanol can be effectively converted into jet fuel at a commercial scale, opening up opportunities for using domestically sourced feedstocks and recycled carbon sources. This includes ethanol produced using LanzaTech’s technology from industrial waste gases, trash, captured CO₂, hydrogen, and agricultural residues, expanding farmers’ contributions beyond traditional crops. Ethanol serves as a crucial link, connecting various domestic feedstocks to aviation fuel markets.
The market opportunity is substantial. By leveraging local resources and ethanol as a versatile molecule, carbon waste can be converted into jet fuel, diesel, and other valuable products. Ethanol, derived from diverse biomass or waste sources, empowers communities worldwide to produce fuel from their own resources, enhancing local energy security. This approach enables the production of distributed carbon for aviation, marine, and heavy-duty transport, offering clean and resilient fuel solutions.
Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech and Chair of LanzaJet, stated, “Investing in this first-of-its-kind facility is about unlocking new market opportunities. The aviation sector alone presents a global market opportunity worth hundreds of billions of dollars. By proving that ethanol can be converted into jet fuel and diesel at scale, we’ve created a pathway to capture a meaningful share of that value. Our vision from day one has been to produce high-quality ethanol and enable its conversion into valuable fuels, supporting communities and driving cleaner energy.”
Jimmy Samartzis, Chief Executive Officer of LanzaJet, added, “This achievement demonstrates the power of innovation, resilience, and teamwork in creating a new industry, overcoming challenges, and enabling global growth. By transforming domestic ethanol into jet fuel at a commercial scale, we have reached a landmark milestone for LanzaJet, global aviation, the SAF industry, and various stakeholders. The technology works as expected, and our commercial-scale plant reinforces our global enabling work. Our experience in engineering, investing, building, operating, and producing this fuel positions us uniquely to grow our business and this global industry in the coming decade.”
LanzaTech has been pioneering sustainable aviation fuel for over a decade, initially developing the ethanol-to-SAF technology in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This work led to lab, pilot, and demonstration-scale plants, the production of on-spec fuels in 2016, ASTM approval in 2018, and commercial SAF flights with Virgin Atlantic and All Nippon Airways in 2018 and 2019. LanzaJet was launched in 2020 to commercialize the technology with early investment from Mitsui, British Airways, and Shell. LanzaJet’s current investors and funders include Airbus, All Nippon Airways, Breakthrough Energy, British Airways, Groupe ADP, LanzaTech, Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund, Mitsui & Co., MUFG, Shell, Southwest Airlines, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the UK Department for Transport. Together, the Lanza ecosystem showcases the impact of sustained innovation, scale-up, and perseverance in transforming a bold idea into a market-ready solution.
