Kuaishou Teams Up with Yuewen Group to Launch “Kuaishou Read” Initiative, Aiming to Create New Heights in Novel-to-Drama Production and Consumption

Kuaishou and China Literature are partnering to dominate the short-form drama market. The “Kuaiyue Plan,” backed by millions in investment and traffic, aims to attract creators and boost user consumption. With Kuaishou’s massive user base and the rapid growth of novel-based content, the partnership leverages China Literature’s IP library, streamlining content creation and monetization through tools, subsidies, and cross-platform distribution. This alliance targets premium IP development and establishes a blueprint for future integration in the evolving entertainment landscape.

Kuaishou, the short-video powerhouse, is teaming up with China Literature, a leading online literature platform under Tencent, in a strategic move to conquer the burgeoning short-form drama market. This partnership, announced on June 12th, signals an ambitious push to establish a robust ecosystem for novel-based dramas, integrating content creation with monetization.

At the heart of this collaboration is the “Kuaiyue Plan,” a joint initiative injecting millions of dollars in cash and significant traffic resources into the market. This comprehensive plan aims to attract creators, cultivate user consumption habits, and ultimately fortify Kuaishou’s content production, user engagement, and platform dominance.

The rise of short-form dramas has been meteoric, and Kuaishou is positioned to capitalize on this trend. The platform boasts a staggering 714 million monthly active users. The platform has been aggressively cultivating niches like short dramas, novels, and other verticals. Notably, the short novel category on Kuaishou has seen exponential growth in the past year, with the number of creators exceeding 2 million, gross merchandise volume soaring by over 10 times, and operational efficiency improving by 200%. Furthermore, over 15% of users in the novel category have adopted a paid content model.

The popularity of novel-based dramas is driven by three key factors: the maturation of the industry ecosystem along with strong demand for intellectual property adaptations; the natural fit between short-form video’s quick-paced narrative style and the structure of these dramas; and the increasing user demand. Over the past year, Kuaishou’s novel-related short video user base has multiplied by a factor of ten, with each user spending two to three times more time on average.

To fuel the “Kuaiyue Plan,” Kuaishou is offering substantial incentives, including a multi-million dollar cash subsidy and access to vast traffic resources. This multifaceted approach will drive creativity and enhance content quality, setting a high standard for the industry.

The strategic alliance addresses multiple facets of the content creation process. Kuaishou plans to leverage China Literature’s extensive IP library, prioritizing adaptations of popular novels. A streamlined selection process will identify high-demand, engaging stories. On the MCN (Multi-Channel Network) front, Kuaishou is actively seeking partnerships with agencies experienced in promoting novel-related apps. These agencies will benefit from promotional campaigns, revenue-sharing models, and initial traffic support, helping creators to monetize quickly and efficiently.

To lower the barriers to entry, China Literature through the Kuaishou Spark Plan, will launch a series of novel-based drama tasks. These tasks will equip creators with tools for story selection, video creation, and payment settlements. Creators can easily select top-performing novels for adaptation, receive authorization, and use the integrated video editing tools. In addition, for the development of premium IP adaptations, Kuaishou and China Literature will provide dedicated resources for producing high-quality dramas. These premium projects will get exclusive promotion within the platform and be showcased widely to strengthen their market presence.

Content distribution will also receive a boost. Kuaishou will work with Tencent’s platforms, like QQ Reading, Tencent Comics, and Qidian Reading, to promote content across multiple platforms. This strategy will magnify exposure, allowing content to reach a broader audience across the entertainment spectrum.

This collaboration marks a defining moment as short-video platforms and content copyright holders increasingly partner to innovate. The “Kuaiyue Plan” creates a practical pathway for creators and fans while also establishing a blueprint for “IP + traffic + technology” integration. In the future, Kuaishou intends to deepen its collaboration with China Literature to promote standardization and scalability of novel-based dramas.
