Meta Enters AI Coding Arena to Challenge Anthropic and OpenAI

Meta is doubling down on its artificial intelligence ambitions with the launch of Muse Spark 1.1, a significant upgrade to its flagship AI model. This move signals Meta’s intensified effort to carve out a substantial market share against established players like OpenAI and Anthropic, particularly in the high-stakes areas of agentic AI and coding assistance.

Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, described Muse Spark 1.1 as its “strongest model for agentic and coding work yet” in a recent interview. The initial Muse Spark model, introduced in April, was limited to select partners via a private API. The updated version, however, is now accessible through a public preview via a developer portal, allowing a broader audience to integrate the technology. While some early partners have immediate access, new users are being placed on a waitlist, with Meta currently prioritizing integration within its own ecosystem rather than third-party marketplaces.

This latest development follows closely on the heels of Muse Image, a generative AI model for image creation, released earlier this week. These rollouts underscore Meta’s strategy to attract both creators and advertisers by expanding its AI-powered product suite.

The pressure on Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to demonstrate a return on the company’s substantial AI investments is mounting. Unlike hyperscale competitors, Meta lacks a dedicated cloud infrastructure business, though it has signaled plans to enter this space. Furthermore, the company has yet to replicate the market impact of leading AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Wang highlighted the “very aggressive and attractive” pricing strategy for Muse Spark 1.1, aiming to undercut rivals. New API accounts will receive $20 in free credits, with subsequent usage priced at $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. “The goal is to really have attractive pricing that scales with immense consumption usage,” Wang stated.

Meta has specifically engineered Muse Spark 1.1 to excel in coding-related tasks, a crucial component for developing sophisticated AI agents capable of autonomously executing complex workflows. Wang elaborated, “You kind of have to build coding capabilities as part of that in service of overall agentic capabilities.” The burgeoning interest in AI agents, fueled by the popularity of platforms like OpenClaw, has prompted Meta to ensure Muse Spark 1.1 is compatible with widely adopted developer frameworks, thereby maximizing adoption potential.

While Meta’s previous AI strategy heavily leaned on open-sourcing its Llama family of models, the company is now prioritizing commercial access to its proprietary AI technologies. However, Wang emphasized Meta’s continued commitment to open source, revealing that a variant of Muse Spark is under development with plans for open-source release, though a timeline remains undisclosed.

Wang also shared his personal enthusiasm for Muse Spark, having “dog-fooded” the model himself. He foresees its potential as a powerful tool for personal health management, assisting with tasks such as web searches, academic paper analysis, and accessing personal health data. “It’s one of these use cases that I think really encapsulates the needs of these agentic systems,” he commented on his AI and health experiments.

Looking ahead, Meta is actively training a more advanced AI model, codenamed “Watermelon,” though its release date is yet to be announced. Muse Spark was previously codenamed “Avocado.”
