Logistics innovator OneRail is set to revolutionize last-mile delivery for retailers with the launch of OmniStar, a sophisticated platform powered by artificial intelligence. This new offering, leveraging Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI software and hardware, aims to equip businesses of all sizes with the capability to make rapid, data-driven decisions regarding the most efficient delivery strategies at scale.
OmniStar is designed to provide retailers with a dynamic AI engine that analyzes a multitude of delivery options in real-time for each individual order. By integrating OneRail’s extensive proprietary data, the platform promises to identify the optimal delivery route, carrier, and method, thereby enhancing efficiency and bolstering profit margins. This development is particularly significant for smaller retailers, who can now gain a competitive edge against e-commerce behemoths like Amazon and Walmart by optimizing their delivery operations.
The explosive growth of e-commerce has placed immense pressure on retailers to not only meet surging consumer demand but also to invest in agile and responsive supply chains. However, many existing logistics processes are often fragmented, leading to inefficiencies and increased costs.
“Without the ability to make lightning-fast decisions, you’re forfeiting margin,” stated OneRail CEO Bill Catania. “Last-mile fulfillment is inherently expensive, and the speed at which these decisions are made directly impacts profitability.”
OneRail reports that its AI-driven platform can reduce the time it takes to determine the optimal routing for a package from an average of 20 minutes to a mere two and a half minutes. This dramatic reduction in decision-making time, according to Catania, translates into the ability for retailers to manage larger, faster, and more precise supply chains.
“This is where artificial intelligence truly shines,” explained David Daeschler, Head of AI at OneRail. “It empowers the system to make these complex routing decisions with extreme rapidity. To achieve this level of performance at scale, the integration of Nvidia’s powerful hardware and sophisticated software is absolutely critical.”
The strategic collaboration between OneRail and Nvidia began three years ago, with a shared vision to infuse AI capabilities into the intricate landscape of logistics.
“The outcome is a real-time decision-making layer that intelligently routes an order to the most suitable carrier and delivery mode, at the optimal cost, rather than relying on outdated static rules or cumbersome manual planning,” commented Azita Martin, Nvidia’s Vice President and General Manager of Retail and Consumer Packaged Goods.
OneRail’s proprietary dataset, which encompasses a vast network of over 12 million drivers and more than 1,000 logistics partners, serves as the foundation for training the AI models. This extensive data enables the system to learn and identify the most efficient routes and delivery permutations.
“The benefits are reciprocal: we operate more efficiently, and our retail partners save money while simultaneously elevating their customer experience,” Daeschler elaborated.
The platform has already undergone initial deployments with select clients. Notably, a large tire distributor reportedly experienced an estimated annual saving of $40 million over three years by leveraging OmniStar to optimize resource utilization.
OneRail also projects that the OmniStar platform will facilitate over $6 billion in gross merchandise volume in the fourth quarter.
Nvidia’s Martin emphasized the platform’s capacity to empower retailers with enhanced decision-making agility. “For retailers, the paramount value lies in their ability to explore a wider array of scenarios, adapt swiftly to evolving conditions, and significantly improve delivery economics without compromising service quality.”
This strategic advancement from OneRail could prove to be a game-changer for smaller retailers, enabling them to compete more effectively on delivery speed and operational efficiency.
Earlier this year, OneRail announced a significant partnership with FedEx, aimed at expanding same-day delivery services across its customer base. This move aligns with the broader industry trend of retailers striving to offer superior and faster delivery options. Catania added that this collaboration will further enhance OneRail’s ability to serve smaller businesses.
“We’re essentially doing for delivery what tools like ChatGPT and Anthropic have done for language generation – the underlying principle is similar,” Daeschler analogized. “They provide broader access to knowledge; we are democratizing access to efficient and affordable delivery solutions. This is all built upon robust proprietary models, trained on our unique datasets, much like how language models are trained on the vastness of the internet.”
