Apple Unveils iOS 27 With Revamped Siri, Bolstering AI Ambitions
Apple has rolled out iOS 27, featuring a significantly reimagined Siri AI personal assistant, ahead of the launch of its latest iPhone models this week. This move signals Apple’s intensified focus on integrating artificial intelligence across its product ecosystem.
The new Siri AI, currently in beta, requires user opt-in via the settings app, and some users may need to join a waitlist for early access. Apple is strategically positioning its upcoming iPhone 18 series as AI powerhouses, attributing this capability to their advanced processors and the wealth of personal data—ranging from calendars to text messages—that resides on the devices.
“It’s personal intelligence that’s actually personal,” stated John Ternus, Apple’s CEO, during the company’s recent iPhone unveiling event. This marks Ternus’s first major product announcement since assuming leadership on September 1st. He emphasized that “the iPhone sits at the center of an amazing ecosystem of intelligent features and experiences that work seamlessly across the products you use every day.”
Apple initially previewed its AI-powered Siri in June. This development follows a prior delay for AI enhancements to the assistant, which were initially slated for release in 2025.
In contrast to the large-scale AI models developed by industry pioneers such as OpenAI and Google, Apple is leveraging its own proprietary, smaller models designed to run efficiently on its devices’ onboard chips. For more complex AI tasks, Apple has introduced “Private Cloud Compute,” a service that utilizes Google Cloud infrastructure, powered by processors from Nvidia and Intel. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly employing Google’s Gemini AI to aid in the development of its own AI models.
Apple has indicated that certain Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features relying on its cloud infrastructure will be subject to daily usage limits. The company plans to offer expanded limits for a fee in the future. “Daily limits may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors,” Apple stated in its release.
The enhanced Siri leverages large language models to meticulously analyze a user’s local personal data, including text messages, emails, and calendar events. This allows it to perform tasks like pinpointing addresses, recalling recipes, or retrieving instructions directly from a user’s communications. Beyond personal data, it can also handle general inquiries and perform web searches.
A dedicated Siri app has been introduced, enabling users to revisit past queries. A notable improvement over previous iterations is Siri’s enhanced conversational capability, allowing users to engage in more natural back-and-forth dialogue.
Initially, Siri AI will be available in English, with support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish scheduled for next month. Due to regulatory considerations, the service will not be immediately available in the European Union or China.
