In a significant move signaling China’s growing influence in the global refrigeration industry, two new international standards for refrigeration compressors, spearheaded by Gree Electric Appliances in collaboration with the Hefei General Machinery Research Institute and Tsinghua University, have been officially released worldwide. These standards, ISO 18501:2025 for positive displacement refrigeration compressors and ISO 18483:2025 for centrifugal refrigeration compressors, represent a pivotal moment for Chinese businesses.
For years, while Chinese manufacturers have dominated the global market with an impressive 82% share of refrigeration compressors, Western nations have largely controlled the development of international standardization. This new development marks a shift in this dynamic.
The path to these new standards was paved by Gree’s leadership. In late 2020, Dong Mingzhu, then-chairwoman of Gree, was elected as the chair of the SC 4 subcommittee on refrigeration compressors. The subsequent four years saw relentless efforts culminating in the formal adoption of these two comprehensive international standards.
The historical context underscores the significance of this achievement. From 2000 to 2005, multinational brands like Daikin, Panasonic, and Mitsubishi Electric held a substantial 40% share of the air conditioning market, commanding the premium segment.
In a past interview, Dong Mingzhu reflected, “Back in 2000, we lacked our own technology, we didn’t have compressors, and we relied on external providers for parts. Without control over the supply chain, we were unable to innovate or truly meet the global demand. That’s why we made the decision to become innovators ourselves.“
Gree’s journey towards self-sufficiency began in 2004 with the acquisition of LINGDA Compressor. That same year, Gree launched its first LINGDA compressor, positioning itself as the first Chinese air conditioning manufacturer with its own compressor brand.
The company’s innovation continued at a breakneck pace. In 2009, Gree unveiled its first variable frequency rotary compressor. This was followed by the launch of its first single-cylinder DC inverter rotary compressor in 2010 and the development of dual-stage enthalpy-increasing variable frequency compressor technology in 2012, later recognized as “international leading.” In 2016, Gree further solidified its technological prowess with the development of the world’s first three-cylinder variable volume ratio compressor.
According to Dong Mingzhu, these advancements have cemented Gree’s leadership position in the global refrigeration compressor landscape.
