A drone incident at the iconic Pavilion of Prince Teng in Nanchang, China, has sparked a fresh wave of concerns regarding the increasing prevalence of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations and related safety issues. A recent social media post detailed how a tourist was injured by a drone while visiting the historic site, a popular destination.
The tourist recounted the incident, stating that she was initially disoriented, believing something had fallen from the historic structure itself. The impact, however, was the result of a collision with a drone.
In response to inquiries, a representative from the Pavilion of Prince Teng confirmed that the area is designated a no-fly zone due to its location in the city center and the relatively compact size of the surrounding area, which is congested with buildings and trees. Local law enforcement authorities, including the local police station, have reiterated that the vicinity of the pavilion is strictly off-limits for drone flights.
Following the incident, the drone operator reportedly contacted the authorities and the injured tourist, leading to a resolution. The drone operator received an administrative penalty, and the tourist received compensation amounting to 800 yuan.
This incident underscores a growing issue as drone technology becomes increasingly accessible. “Black flights” – those conducted without proper registration, authorization, or in violation of airspace restrictions – are a significant concern.
China has taken steps to address these concerns. The “Interim Provisions on the Administration of the Flight of Unmanned Aircraft” officially came into effect on January 1, 2024. This regulation outlines specific penalties for unauthorized drone operations. Violations can range from a fine of up to 500 yuan for those flying without approval within controlled airspace or using model aircraft outside designated zones, up to 10,000 yuan and confiscation of the drone for more serious infractions.
