In a development that’s electrifying the tech world, reports are surfacing of significant challenges for mobile power bank maker Romoss Technology. Citing data from the National Certification and Accreditation Information Public Service Platform, numerous 3C certifications for the company’s fast-charging power banks have been suspended. Remaining certifications primarily cover chargers and sockets, painting a concerning shift in the company’s core product focus.
Adding to the intrigue, a scan of Romoss’s official Douyin (TikTok) store reveals a stark absence of power bank listings. The digital shelves are now stocked primarily with charging plugs and cables, raising questions about distribution strategies. While some third-party retailers on the platform still carry the brand’s power banks, the official channel’s shift is noteworthy.
However, the situation appears less dramatic on dominant e-commerce platforms like JD.com (京东) and Taobao (淘宝), where Romoss’s flagship stores continue to offer power banks for purchase.
The situation comes amidst heightened scrutiny following reports of multiple Beijing universities banning the use of Romoss power banks. In response, Romoss has announced a recall of over 490,000 power banks via its official website.
The recall is attributed to potential overheating issues related to the constituent materials in a limited number of units. The company stated that a “very small percentage” of products could overheat during use, potentially leading to fire hazards in extreme situations. This has inevitably sparked concerns among consumers and industry watchers.
As part of the recall, Romoss is offering consumers a free replacement with a new power bank of equal or greater value, that conforms to safety standards, or a full refund.
However, the recall process itself has drawn scrutiny. Requiring consumers to return their malfunctioning devices via postal services has created further questions, since it has also been reported that multiple courier companies have already stopped accepting these products.
