CNBC AI News – July 18th – In a recent interview, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell, affectionately known as “Gaben,” shared his perspectives on the burgeoning influence of AI and offered insights into his core entrepreneurial philosophies.
When quizzed about whether individuals should prioritize investing in AI technology development or focus on mastering the existing AI tools, Newell offered a nuanced view.
“I think both are important. My take is that the better you understand what’s underneath those existing AI tools, the more effective you are going to be at using them,” Newell stated.
He envisions a future where individuals adept at leveraging AI for development, even without traditional coding skills, could outperform programmers with a decade of experience. This speaks to the transformative potential of AI as an empowering tool, leveling the playing field for those with the vision to harness it.
Newell elaborated, “Even if you’re purely a consumer of these tools, you will find using these tools incredibly beneficial. But I think as you start understanding the methods and the mindsets of the people building these machine learning systems, your ability to use those tools is going to continue to improve. So, I think they are both important and highly synergistic.” This underlines the crucial interplay between practical application and a foundational understanding of AI principles.
However, Newell’s tone differs from the overt enthusiasm displayed by some other major gaming corporations. While EA proclaimed generative AI as central to its business strategy during its 2024 earnings call, and Sony announced the integration of AI into PlayStation studios for accelerated game development last year, Valve seems to be adopting a more measured approach.
Notably, Valve has already begun integrating AI internally. An engineer working on the upcoming title “Deadlock” revealed that they successfully resolved the game’s online matchmaking issues by utilizing code architecture generated by ChatGPT. This demonstrates the practical, real-world application of AI in addressing complex development challenges.
