CNBC AI News, July 23 – The United States has officially announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today, marking the third time the nation has exited the global entity.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep regret over the U.S. announcement.
According to a statement released by the U.S. State Department, the decision to withdraw stems from concerns that UNESCO “promotes divisive social and cultural agendas, overemphasizes the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and does not align with U.S. foreign policy priorities.”
The withdrawal is slated to take effect on December 31, 2026, as stipulated by UNESCO regulations.
This marks the third time in history the U.S. has pulled out of UNESCO. The first departure occurred in 1984, citing allegations of corruption and mismanagement within the organization. The U.S. rejoined UNESCO in 2003.
In October 2017, the U.S. once again announced its decision to withdraw, pointing to mounting arrears, the need for fundamental reforms within the agency, and concerns over UNESCO’s “persistent bias against Israel.” This withdrawal took effect on December 31, 2018. Washington then rejoined the organization in 2023, before this latest departure.
