CNBC AI News, July 24 – Fujian University of Technology (working title, hereinafter referred to as “Fuyao University”), founded by Fuyao Group’s Chairman Cao Dewang, announced today via its official WeChat account the successful completion of its 2025 undergraduate admissions.
The inaugural class of 50 undergraduates has received their acceptance letters, with the minimum admission score set at 616.
Early data indicates that Fuyao University’s admission scores in Guangxi Province surpassed those of established institutions including Beijing Normal University, Xiamen University, and South China University of Technology – all distinguished as either 985 or 211 project universities.
Similar trends were observed in Hunan Province, where Fuyao University’s admission scores exceeded those of prominent 985 universities such as Beijing Normal University, Xiamen University, and Xi’an Jiaotong University.
The university’s founding is spearheaded by Cao Dewang, the chairman of Fuyao Group, a leading automotive glass manufacturer. The inaugural president is Professor Wang Shuguo, former president of both Harbin Institute of Technology and Xi’an Jiaotong University, both “Double First-Class” universities in China.
However, the release of these high admission scores and accompanying acceptance letters online has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from some netizens.
Some have questioned the rationale behind choosing the newly established Fuyao University over more established 985 or 211 institutions, questioning students’ and their parents’ decision-making process and perceived lack of consideration for future employment prospects.
According to media reports, one admitted student who scored 674 faced significant online backlash for his decision.
In response, the student stated that he is unconcerned by the negative comments, emphasizing that his decision was made after thorough research and family discussion.
He recounted attending a presentation by Professor Wang Shuguo and university faculty at his high school, where he was impressed by the faculty and unique educational approach. He also highlighted Wang Shuguo’s respected reputation.
The student explained that while Zhejiang University was initially his top choice, his score fell slightly short of their admission requirements.
While the student and his parents acknowledged the potential benefits of attending a traditional 985 university, they ultimately decided that Fuyao University was the best fit. In his own words, “The quality of a university cannot be determined by others’ opinions. You have to experience it firsthand. I can’t please everyone.”
