CNBC AI News, August 2nd – A viral video circulating on social media has sparked a wave of curiosity and commentary after an internet user shared footage of what appears to be white mushrooms sprouting on a mango.
The individual who posted the video told media outlets that the unusual growth was discovered while harvesting mangoes just days prior. “We’ve been cultivating mangoes for seven or eight years, and this is the first time we’ve ever seen a mango with these wild fungi. We were quite surprised,” she stated.
The video quickly gained traction, captivating a wide audience online.
According to the user, the mango was ripened and the fruit consumed, with no discernible difference in taste from ordinary mangoes. However, the “white mushrooms” were discarded uneaten.
Meanwhile, further investigation led to consultation with an expert: the Deputy Director of the Biological Research Institute at the Panzhihua Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, specializing in edible fungi.
Based on the video and images provided, the expert identified the fungus as *Schizophyllum commune*, commonly known as split gill mushroom.
The expert explained that the growth was likely facilitated by carbonization of the mango’s surface, coupled with the fruit’s inherent nutrients. Under favorable environmental conditions, fungi can colonize such areas and produce fruiting bodies.
It is worth noting, however, that consumption of such fungi is not recommended for safety reasons.
