CNBC AI News, August 3rd – Guangxi Province, China, is aiming to boost consumer spending through a renewed “trade-in” subsidy program, according to an announcement on the “Guangxi Commerce Department” WeChat account. Effective August 5th, 2025, the province will reinstate subsidies for consumers trading in old appliances, 3C digital products (computers, communication devices, and consumer electronics), electric bicycles, and home renovation/kitchen & bath items for new ones.
This revival will initially focus on in-store redemptions, discontinuing the online platform redemption option. This strategic pivot suggests an emphasis on supporting local retailers and driving foot traffic to brick-and-mortar establishments.
Guangxi authorities are emphasizing continuity, promising that the subsidy standards will remain consistent with previous offerings. This pledge of stability is intended to reassure consumers and encourage participation.
The subsidy structure is as follows: Trade-ins of old appliances are eligible for subsidies of up to 20%, with a maximum cap of 2,000 yuan (approximately $280 USD) per item. New 3C digital product purchases receive a 15% subsidy, capped at 500 yuan (approximately $70 USD). Electric bicycle trade-ins garner subsidies up to 600 yuan. For home renovation and kitchen & bath upgrades, consumers can receive up to 1,000 yuan per product category, with an overall maximum subsidy of 15,000 yuan per individual.
Funding will be allocated daily based on redemption proportions across different categories:
Appliance trade-ins: 4 million yuan
New 3C digital products: 1 million yuan
Electric bicycle trade-ins: 300,000 yuan
Home renovation and kitchen & bath: 700,000 yuan
The initiative operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the daily funding limit for each category is reached, the subsidy program will be suspended for that category until the following day.
Subsidies will be distributed as digital coupons through the UnionPay Cloud QuickPass platform, starting daily at 10:00 AM. This leverages an existing and widely adopted digital payment infrastructure.
