Shanghai Neighborhood’s Targeted Restrictions Spark Controversy, Couriers Boycott, Platform Intervenes

Riders allege that accessing the high-end community requires them to board a dedicated shuttle, where they must deliver packages in a specific order, accompanied by security personnel. Remaining drivers are forced to wait in the vehicle. This process adds an average of 10+ minutes per delivery, contributing to frequent late deliveries and diminished earnings.

Some drivers who have experienced deliveries to the community have stated they will refuse future orders there, with some offering an additional 5 yuan to transfer the delivery – an offer that has been met with no takers.

Adding to the drivers’ discontent, the residential complex allows couriers delivering packages free access, while imposing restrictions specifically on food delivery riders.

In response to the growing controversy, media outlets contacted the property management and relevant delivery service representatives.

A property management representative claims the policy has been in effect for several years, justifying the restriction on grounds that delivery riders experience high people flow, unlike couriers, who tend to be consistent.

The representative stated that the rules have been implemented for many years. The property has not yet received complaints from homeowners and there are still some food delivery drivers accepting orders at the residential complex.

Of note, reports of delivery drivers using the shuttle service to deliver to the park’s residents date back to 2022.

Meituan, the delivery platform, responded after receiving rider complaints, saying they are working to find balance between guaranteeing the experience of property owners while guaranteeing the delivery rider’s rights.

According to real estate listings, Renheng Park Century, located at Lane 88, Yinrong Road, in the upscale Lujiazui business district, is positioned as a luxury residential development. Resale prices average approximately 142,000 yuan (roughly $20,000 USD) per square meter.
