CNBC AI News, August 19th – A recent dialogue between the People’s Daily and Yu Donglai, Chairman of Pang Dong Lai (胖东来) Commercial Group, has shed light on the company’s unique approach to business and its philosophy surrounding employee compensation.
In the interview, Yu shared his insights on high-quality development and the pursuit of exceptional service.
A key question emerged: Does Pang Dong Lai’s practice of offering high salaries and generous benefits to its employees defy conventional business logic?
Yu Donglai firmly disagrees. “Back in 1999, I earned 17 million yuan, and I decided to distribute 50% of it to my employees at the end of the year,” he stated.
“Treat your employees well, and they, in turn, will treat customers well. This creates a virtuous cycle that benefits society and allows the company to flourish in a responsible and sustainable manner.”
“The emphasis on our people is critical to our success. I’m friends with numerous other entrepreneurs, and we often share our business insights. When I see areas where their operations might be improved, or perhaps if my direct style can be of assistance, I step in. Ultimately, respecting and empowering your team is essential for long-term growth and stability.”
Pang Dong Lai’s “high-wage, high-benefit” model has received considerable media attention in the past.
Notably, on June 11th of this year, Yu Donglai publicly announced that Pang Dong Lai’s projected net profit for the year is approximately 1.5 billion yuan.
Currently, Pang Dong Lai employs over 8,000 individuals. The average monthly salary for employees is around 9,000 yuan, translating to roughly 100,000 yuan annually.
Furthermore, the compensation for Pang Dong Lai’s management and technical staff is even more significant.
According to Yu Donglai, the average annual income for management and technical personnel is approximately 700,000 yuan.
During the “2025 China Supermarket Week” event held on March 28th, Yu Donglai also presented relevant data.
In 2024, Pang Dong Lai’s average monthly salary for entry-level employees was 8,315 yuan.
Between January and February 2025, this figure increased to 9,886 yuan. Even the most basic entry-level positions received a minimum monthly salary of 8,329 yuan.
Compensation packages for management positions such as section chiefs, department heads, and store managers are even more substantial. From January to February 2025, average monthly salaries were stated to be 20,000 yuan, 30,000 yuan, and 80,000 yuan, respectively.
