World’s First Gen 8.6 AMOLED Production Line Without FMM, Backed by $7.6 Billion Investment, Reaches Milestone

Visionox and Hefei Guoxian’s Gen 8.6 AMOLED production line, the world’s first using FMM-less (ViP) technology, has completed its main building in Hefei, China. The RMB 55 billion project aims for a monthly capacity of 32,000 glass substrates and achieved this milestone in just 168 days. ViP technology offers improved resolution, power consumption, and lifespan compared to traditional FMM AMOLED, potentially disrupting the display industry and accelerating AMOLED adoption in mid-to-large size displays.

Visionox, a Chinese display panel manufacturer, has announced the topping out of the main building for its Gen 8.6 AMOLED production line at Hefei Guoxian Technology. This project is a joint venture with a Hefei investment platform.

This groundbreaking facility, the world’s first Gen 8.6 AMOLED production line to utilize FMM-less technology (ViP), represents a significant leap forward for the large-scale mass production of ViP technology.

The rapid progress of this project not only accelerates the commercialization of advanced display technologies, but also underscores China’s growing innovation prowess in the high-end display sector.

The pioneering Gen 8.6 AMOLED production line, located in the Hefei XinZhan Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, is being constructed and operated by Hefei Guoxian. Visionox and a Hefei municipal investment entity are funding the project.

Visionox and Hefei Guoxian are collaborating to translate this technology into reality. The total investment in the production line is RMB 55 billion, with a designed production capacity of 32,000 glass substrates (2290mm x 2620mm) per month.

Since breaking ground in February 2025, the project achieved the main building’s completion in just 168 days, overcoming numerous challenges inherent in constructing a high-generation production line through optimized resource allocation and technological breakthroughs. Industry observers note that this aggressive timeline demonstrates China’s commitment to rapidly scaling advanced manufacturing capabilities.

The production line is based on Visionox’s proprietary ViP technology, which employs semiconductor photolithography to manufacture AMOLED pixels. This eliminates the limitations of traditional Fine Metal Mask (FMM) processes, offering advantages such as independent pixels, high precision, and improved production yields. The result is enhanced cutting efficiency and cost-effectiveness for AMOLED panels, providing superior display solutions for mid-to-large size applications such as tablets, laptops, and automotive displays.

ViP AMOLED panels offer substantial improvements in key performance indicators, including resolution, power consumption, and lifespan, compared to FMM AMOLED panels. These advancements meet the evolving demands of various applications, from smartphones and laptops to automotive displays and AR/VR devices, for sharper image quality, longer battery life, and more stable performance.

The successful progress of this production line is expected to accelerate the adoption of AMOLED technology in medium and large-sized displays and reshape the competitive landscape of the global display industry. Analysts predict that ViP technology could disrupt the established order, offering manufacturers a new path to high-performance, cost-effective AMOLED displays.

ViP (Visionox intelligent Pixelization) AMOLED refers to AMOLED display technology that utilizes semiconductor photolithography for pixel fabrication, circumventing limitations of traditional FMM (Fine Metal Mask) processes.
