CNBC AI News, August 14 – Sony (SNE) has strategically revamped its PlayStation 5 (PS5) supply chain in response to U.S. tariffs, according to CFO Hiroki Totoki during the company’s Q1 FY2025 earnings call.
Totoki revealed that all PS5 consoles currently sold in the U.S. market have now had their production shifted out of China. This marks a significant milestone for Sony in diversifying its manufacturing base and mitigating the impact of potential tariff-related costs.
This supply chain realignment is designed to shield the company from the ongoing trade tensions that have impacted numerous tech companies reliant on Chinese manufacturing. The shift in production of PS5 peripherals is also underway and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2025.
“Regarding consoles, we are diversifying our supply chain,” Totoki stated explicitly. “The shift in console production has been completed. Including peripherals, the entire supply chain shift is scheduled to be finalized before the end of the first half of the fiscal year [September 30th]. All hardware sold in the U.S. is now sourced or manufactured outside of China.”
Regarding pricing strategy, Sony has so far maintained stable PS5 prices in the U.S. market. However, Totoki emphasized that future pricing will remain flexible, taking into consideration a variety of factors, including profit targets, product lifecycle stage, shipment volumes, game content sales, and consumer price sensitivity. Sony intends to dynamically adjust its pricing approach to balance profitability and market competitiveness.
