CNBC AI News, August 24th – Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei recently met with a delegation led by Lu Jianjun, Party Secretary of Xi’an Jiaotong University, and Zhang Liqun, President of the university and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, at Huawei’s Shenzhen headquarters. The visit, as reported by the Xi’an Jiaotong University Shenzhen Alumni Association’s official account, aimed to foster deeper collaboration between the tech giant and the esteemed university.
The discussions centered around potential partnerships in research, education, and talent development. According to insights from the meeting, Ren Zhengfei underscored the critical role of fundamental research, particularly in mathematics. He emphasized the university’s core mission to explore groundbreaking innovations.
Ren highlighted Huawei’s strategy of actively engaging in collaborative innovation with universities. This includes opening up real-world industrial challenges and establishing specialized competitive programs, fostering a dynamic ecosystem for innovation.
Ren Zhengfei expressed his strong conviction in the continued advancement of China’s technological research capabilities.
This meeting follows an interview published by the People’s Daily in June where Ren Zhengfei shared his views on China’s technological landscape.
In that interview, Ren noted opportunities for China in mid-to-low-end chip development, highlighting the efforts of numerous Chinese chip companies and the promising potential of compound semiconductors.
Regarding silicon-based chips, Ren suggested leveraging mathematical solutions to compensate for physical limitations, employing “non-Moore’s Law” approaches, and utilizing cluster computing principles to meet current needs.
Ren also stated his belief that software development presents less of a bottleneck, being based on mathematical symbols and code, rather than physical manufacturing.
He acknowledged the challenges lie in education, talent cultivation, and the development of a robust talent pipeline. Ren envisions a future with hundreds, even thousands, of operating systems supporting various sectors of the Chinese economy, from industry to agriculture and healthcare.
