CNBC AI News, August 24th – A viral sensation is sweeping across China’s social media platform Weibo: the “Lu Xun-inspired knitted vest.”
The vest, officially dubbed the “Mr. Lu Xun Knitted Vest” from the “Lu Xun Series” line, is a creation of “Renwen Zhibao” (人文之宝), a cultural and creative brand under the renowned People’s Literature Publishing House (人民文学出版社).
Online wags are hailing the garment as a “literary armor,” claiming it instantly transforms the wearer into an “intellectually enlightened youth.” Some writers even jest that donning the vest accelerates their writing process.
Zhou Lingfei, grandson of Lu Xun and president of the Lu Xun Cultural Foundation, stated that he and his colleagues have been closely observing the buzz around Lu Xun-themed merchandise for years. Consequently, the vest’s overnight success came as no surprise.
He explained, “Lu Xun has long stood as a cultural icon for the Chinese nation, and even nearly 90 years after his death, his global influence remains unshaken.”
“I believe that using such methods to bridge the gap between the public and historical figures is a positive development. It’s a crucial step in preserving and passing down our classics and outstanding traditional culture,” Zhou Lingfei added.
However, Zhou Lingfei also highlighted concerns about the proliferation of “problematic products” that caricature Lu Xun’s image in various trivializing and disrespectful ways.
Examples cited included depictions of Lu Xun as a square-faced stinky tofu, a round-faced dough ball, wearing a pirate eye patch, or even sporting dyed-blond hair and gold chains – trends that have caused distress to his family and the foundation.
Data reveals that Lu Xun’s works are deeply ingrained in the Chinese education system, with 15 of his articles included in primary and secondary school textbooks, reflecting his enduring and widespread impact.
