AMD Claims New AI Chip Now Outperforms Nvidia’s Competition

AMD CEO Lisa Su is challenging NVIDIA’s dominance in the booming AI chip market. AMD’s new MI355 chips reportedly outperform NVIDIA’s offerings in AI software execution and offer a price advantage. Su forecasts the AI chip market will exceed $500 billion. OpenAI will utilize AMD’s chips, and the company aims to significantly expand its market share, though NVIDIA currently leads with substantial revenue. The MI series is pivotal for AMD’s growth.

AMD CEO Lisa Su is making a bold play in the burgeoning AI chip market, declaring that the company’s latest AI processors are not only competitive with NVIDIA’s offerings but also targeting a monumental market expansion. Su, speaking at a recent company event, not only outlined the performance gains of the MI300 series but also signaled a bullish outlook for the industry as a whole.

Su boldly stated that the entire AI chip market is on track to surpass $500 billion within the next three years, illustrating the magnitude of the opportunity AMD is aggressively pursuing.

Specifically, Su highlighted that the newest iterations of the MI350 series chips have surpassed NVIDIA’s comparable products in terms of speed, adding to the substantial performance boost already seen in its previous generation of chips.

Su went on to emphasize one key achievement: The MI355 chips, which began shipping earlier this month, show a staggering 35-fold performance increase compared to their predecessors.

According to AMD’s claims, the MI355 chips outperform the NVIDIA B200 and GB200 in AI software execution, and are nearly equal in terms of AI model training performance. AMD also notes a significant price advantage when compared to NVIDIA’s offerings.

Adding validation to AMD’s advancements, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who was present at the event, confirmed that OpenAI will be utilizing AMD’s MI300X and MI450 chips.

While AMD still lags behind NVIDIA in this segment, these new product releases are critical for the company to aggressively close the gap. The launch is particularly significant for AMD, with Su revising prior market growth predictions. The original forecast of a $500 billion market size by 2028 now appears to be a conservative estimate.

This announcement arrives after AMD’s February data center outlook, which showed growth that was slightly below external estimates. These MI series updates are projected to reinvigorate the company’s growth trajectory. The company is determined to demonstrate it can compete effectively with its significantly larger rival.

With global tech giants pouring billions of dollars into AI infrastructure, the demand for AI chips continues to outstrip supply, resulting in skyrocketing prices, occasionally exceeding tens of thousands of dollars per chip.

For AMD, the AI accelerator business represents a pivotal shift, moving the company away from long-standing competition with Intel in the personal computer processor market.

However, NVIDIA currently dominates the market. Although AMD is generating billions of dollars annually from its AI chip sales, NVIDIA’s revenue has already surpassed the $100 billion mark.
