In a bold move that’s already sending ripples through the automotive industry, Xiaomi, led by its charismatic founder Lei Jun, has accepted a challenge issued by Tesla. During the unveiling of its latest vehicle, the YU7, Xiaomi didn’t mince words regarding Tesla’s prior invitation to a head-to-head comparison.
“They are very, very confident,” Lei Jun remarked, acknowledging the market dominance of the Model Y. It’s a vehicle that has, after all, secured its position as a global top seller for several years.
Recalling the exchange, Lei Jun revealed, “They sent out the challenge, and I was a bit surprised. They said, ‘Let’s compare the refreshed Model Y.'”
“I looked at the others, and they didn’t respond. So, I simply replied, ‘Okay.’” he added.
Lei Jun’s response encapsulates Xiaomi’s competitive spirit. He emphasized, even if they don’t win, the point is to accept the challenge. Xiaomi isn’t one to back down.
The timing is interesting, as Tesla recently launched an upgraded Model Y, priced between 263,500 and 303,500 yuan. These upgrades encompass both aesthetic improvements and enhancements to passenger comfort that included heated and ventilated seats.
