YU7 Fever: Xiaomi’s New EV Sparks a Second-Hand Market Frenzy
Early adopters of Xiaomi’s inaugural electric vehicle, the YU7, aren’t just getting a new ride; they’re potentially sitting on a hot commodity. The highly anticipated EV has ignited a frenzy, creating a secondary market where early order slots are fetching a premium.
Delivery times, however, are proving to be a test of patience. Those who locked in their orders for the standard YU7 can expect to wait anywhere from 53 to 56 weeks. For the top-of-the-line Max model, the wait is slightly shorter, but still stretches to a minimum of 33 to 36 weeks. This translates to a significant lead time of at least eight months.
The lengthy wait times have fueled speculation and a sense of urgency. Online forums are buzzing with discussions, with some users jokingly stating that anyone placing an order after a certain time on June 26th might not see their car before the end of the year.
This scarcity, coupled with the YU7’s buzz, has created an opportunity. “Those who get their hands on the YU7 first are poised to capitalize on immense exposure,” explained one auto blogger. “They’re using the vehicles for video content and live streams, as well as reselling them at a markup, creating a vibrant secondary market. Based on the current demand, selling shouldn’t be a problem.”
Evidence of this entrepreneurial spirit is already visible. Order slots for the YU7 are appearing on used car platforms, with markups hitting as high as 18,000 yuan. Legal experts are advising buyers to proceed with caution when engaging in these unofficial transactions.
While this secondary market flourishes, the official sales channels offer little solace for impatient buyers. According to some Xiaomi sales representatives, only customers who have officially locked in their orders are given a production timeline. Those who haven’t, regardless of how early they thought they placed an order, are not guaranteed a spot in the production queue. This means some listings on these platforms, that claim they can offer earlier delivery dates, might not be as advantageous as they seem. The sales representative also mentions there is a small amount of available stock that can be delivered in 1 – 2 months, but are very scarce.
The YU7’s popularity underscores the intense competition in the burgeoning EV market and the desire for immediate gratification in the face of burgeoning demand.
