Singapore Transport Minister Visits WeRide to Boost Autonomous Mobility Cooperation

Singapore is integrating self-driving vehicles into its public transport by late 2025, starting with residential areas. This move follows a visit by Singapore’s transport minister to WeRide, an autonomous driving leader. The partnership aims to accelerate AV deployment and improve connectivity, addressing demographic shifts and labor shortages. Singapore plans to expedite AV adoption over the next five years with WeRide’s support.

GUANGZHOU, China, June 29, 2025 — Singapore is set to integrate self-driving vehicles into its public transportation network by the end of 2025, a significant step forward in the nation’s embrace of autonomous mobility. This development follows a high-level visit by Singapore’s Acting Minister for Transport, Mr. Jeffrey Siow, to the Guangzhou headquarters of WeRide, a prominent player in the autonomous driving industry.

The delegation, which included Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling and representatives from key transport unions and authorities, met with WeRide’s leadership. Discussions focused on strengthening the collaboration between Singapore’s Ministry of Transport and WeRide to accelerate the deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and enhance the city-state’s public transit system.

Acting Minister Siow announced that the initial deployment of AVs will be in residential areas, starting with Punggol and later expanding to Tengah, a new town designed with a focus on reducing car dependency. This initiative is strategically timed to address Singapore’s demographic shifts, including an aging population and labor shortages. WeRide’s Robobus and Robotaxi services are viewed as crucial solutions for improving connectivity and alleviating manpower challenges in public transport, particularly for services like night buses or less-frequented routes.

The high-level engagement underscored a shared commitment to advancing autonomous driving research, development, and commercialization. Singapore’s goal is to expedite AV adoption over the next five years, and this partnership with WeRide is a testament to that ambition. The delegation had the opportunity to experience WeRide’s autonomous offerings firsthand, gaining insights into how these technologies can effectively meet real-world transportation needs.

WeRide, a leading provider of autonomous driving solutions in Singapore, has been at the forefront of innovation in the sector. The company’s Robobus has been in safe commercial operation for a year at Resorts World Sentosa, connecting key locations. Furthermore, WeRide launched Singapore’s first commercial autonomous sanitation project in November 2024, deploying its Robosweeper units shortly after securing essential operating licenses from the Land Transport Authority (LTA). These milestones highlight WeRide’s rapid progress and adherence to regulatory standards.

Looking ahead, WeRide is focused on deepening its partnerships with local stakeholders to introduce more validated autonomous products and scalable business models across Singapore. Globally, the company continues to collaborate with governments to develop smarter, more sustainable transportation systems that cater to the evolving demands of urban environments and their inhabitants.
