Dianping Admits to Greenlighting Fake Reviews: Penalties Issued for Violating Merchants

Dianping has responded to allegations of facilitating review manipulation, stating its “notes” feature is for genuine user experiences. The platform claims that content deviating from actual visits doesn’t affect star ratings. Dianping’s rules prohibit “cloud exploration” and require “Daren” to visit establishments. The company admitted a “small number of merchants” incentivized fake reviews during promotions, leading to their removal and penalties. Dianping vows to improve its mechanisms to prevent future incidents.

CNBC AI News, July 7 – A recent report by CCTV’s “Finance Investigation” program has shed light on allegations that Dianping, a popular Chinese lifestyle and e-commerce platform, may have been facilitating review manipulation. In response to the scrutiny, Dianping has issued a statement addressing the claims.

Dianping asserts that its “Dianxing” platform is designed to foster genuine user reviews through their “notes” feature, aiming to help businesses attract online traffic by encouraging users to share their authentic experiences. The platform clarifies that content within these “notes” that diverges from a user’s actual experience does not impact a merchant’s overall star rating on Dianping.

According to the platform’s “Dianxing Public Cooperation Platform Rules,” a core tenet is the emphasis on “Daren” (influencers or key opinion leaders) to genuinely visit the establishments they review. The rules strictly prohibit the repurposing of content and implement a performance score system for Daren, with penalties for fraudulent visits.

Furthermore, the platform explicitly forbids “cloud exploration” practices, where businesses provide review materials to users who have not actually visited the location.

Dianping acknowledged that a “small number of merchants” violated these platform regulations during participation in promotional activities, by incentivizing users to create notes without a physical visit. The company stated that it has promptly investigated these situations, removed the offending merchants from the platform, and imposed penalties.

Looking ahead, Dianping has committed to further refining its review and approval mechanisms to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
