CNBC AI News – July 21 – NVIDIA (NVDA) founder and CEO Jensen Huang recently sat down with CCTV’s “Face to Face,” where he lauded China’s advancements in supply chain and artificial intelligence.
Notably, Huang revealed his recent meeting in Beijing with Xiaomi (XIACF) CEO Lei Jun, highlighting a collaboration that stretches back to the Chinese tech giant’s inception.
Huang stated, “My partnership with Lei Jun goes way back. We’ve collaborated on smartphones and are now jointly developing AI, autonomous driving software, and many other projects. The Chinese market is vibrant, filled with exceptionally innovative engineers. China boasts one of the largest populations of computer scientists globally, rivaled only by the U.S., and possesses an immense consumer base.”
He also mentioned that he recognized Lei Jun’s potential for extraordinary success from their very first meeting.
The recent meeting included Lei Jun showcasing Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra electric vehicle to Huang, complete with a photo opportunity in front of the car.
Huang expressed admiration for the vehicle, stating, “Lei Jun showed me their new car, and the technology is incredible, the design is beautiful, and the in-car technology is among the best in the world. I would very much like to buy a Xiaomi car, but unfortunately, it’s not available in the United States, which is a pity.”
The collaboration between Huang and Lei dates back roughly a decade, a time when NVIDIA’s prominence was significantly less established.
In late 2013, Huang made a personal appearance at the Xiaomi 3 smartphone launch, even delivering part of his presentation in Mandarin.
That phone featured NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, though its performance proved underwhelming, leading to NVIDIA’s eventual retreat from the smartphone market.
In a lighter vein, Lei Jun’s choice of a leather jacket for the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra launch earlier this year, intended to match the “ultra” driving experience, drew comparisons to Huang’s signature style.
Lei Jun responded humorously to the accusations of copying Huang’s style, quipping, “Was everyone not wearing leather jackets before they knew Jensen Huang? Does wearing a leather jacket suddenly mean I’m copying Huang Renxun? If I wear a suit, am I copying Elon Musk? This is ridiculous.”
