CNBC AI News, August 16 – China’s popular tea chain Mixue Ice Cream & Tea is facing a social media storm after a customer in Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, discovered a cockroach in an unopened cup of Jasmine Milk Tea.
According to reports, the customer had purchased the beverage at a Mixue Ice Cream & Tea outlet. The unsettling discovery quickly went viral, triggering concerns about the brand’s quality control.
The store promptly refunded the customer after being notified of the unwelcome addition to the tea. However, the customer argued that under China’s Food Safety Law, Mixue Ice Cream & Tea should also provide compensation of 1,000 yuan (approximately $137 USD).
A Ganzhou regional representative for Mixue Ice Cream & Tea stated that they are reviewing CCTV footage to determine how the cockroach entered the cup.
Mixue Ice Cream & Tea customer service responded to media inquiries, expressing their apologies and pledging to enhance service awareness at their stores. According to reports, the company has already compensated the customer 1,000 yuan.
Analysts suggest that food safety issues at Mixue Ice Cream & Tea may be linked to its heavy reliance on a franchise model.
The company’s financial reports indicate that as of December 31, 2024, Mixue Ice Cream & Tea operated 46,479 stores globally. Of these, a staggering 46,462 were franchise locations, with only 17 directly managed by the company. This means that franchises constitute a massive 99.96% of Mixue’s total outlets, raising questions about oversight and consistency across its vast network.
