Chengdu Topway Delivers First Domestically Produced 8.6 Gen OLED CMM, Breaking Key Barrier

Chengdu Topway has successfully produced and delivered China’s first domestically developed 8.6th generation Common Metal Mask (CMM) to a leading client. This marks a significant breakthrough in OLED core material production, addressing a critical technology gap. The 2620 x 2290mm CMM is designed for medium-to-large sized displays and enables lower production costs. Overcoming challenges in exposure, etching, and tension control, this achievement reduces reliance on foreign technology and strengthens China’s advanced display ecosystem.

CNBC AI News, August 18th – Chengdu Topway Optoelectronic Technology (hereinafter referred to as “Chengdu Topway”) has announced the successful production and delivery of its first independently developed 8.6th generation Common Metal Mask (CMM) to a leading industry client, according to media reports.

This achievement marks a significant breakthrough in the domestic production of core materials for the OLED industry, addressing a critical technology gap in high-generation metal mask manufacturing within China.

As a recipient of key national project funding, Chengdu Topway is pioneering the application of Korean mask precision regeneration technology in China. They are also among the first domestic companies to engage in the research and production of precision metal masks (CMMs), solidifying their position as a key supplier to numerous OLED manufacturers. Their products are vital core components in the next-generation information technology sector, a key pillar of China’s industrial foundation.

The delivered 8.6th generation CMM boasts a substrate size of 2620 x 2290mm, specifically designed for medium-to-large sized display products such as high-end OLED TVs, automotive center console screens, tablets, and laptops. Compared to the 6th generation OLED technology used predominantly for smartphone screens, these larger substrates enable the cutting of more panels per vapor deposition process, significantly reducing per-unit production costs.

From a technical standpoint, the development of large generation CMMs presents considerable challenges. Unlike Fine Metal Masks (FMMs), where size primarily expands in the length direction, large-generation CMMs require intricate processes like exposure, etching, and tension control across the entire material surface. This substantially elevates the complexity of both the materials used and the manufacturing process, creating technical bottlenecks in crucial steps such as sheet fabrication and tension welding.

Leveraging its extensive technical expertise gained in the mass production of 6th generation CMMs, coupled with dedicated process development for the 8.6th generation, Chengdu Topway has successfully overcome these hurdles, delivering the first locally produced 8.6th generation CMM. This pivotal breakthrough lays a robust foundation for the domestic display industry to break free from reliance on foreign technology, mitigate supply chain risks, and injects significant momentum into the development of a comprehensive regional ecosystem for advanced display technologies.
