Waymo to Launch Testing at San Jose Airport This Fall

Waymo, the autonomous driving technology unit of Alphabet, is expanding its reach into the airport transportation sector, announcing plans to initiate robotaxi testing at San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) this fall. This move signifies Waymo’s ambition to integrate its driverless technology into diverse transportation ecosystems, marking its first airport operation within California. The company intends to commence paid rides at SJC later in the year, pending successful testing and regulatory approvals.

The airport initiative highlights Waymo’s strategic focus on high-traffic areas that can benefit from the efficiency and potentially enhanced safety of autonomous vehicles. By offering robotaxi services at SJC, Waymo aims to capture a significant share of the airport transportation market, catering to both business and leisure travelers. Specific pick-up points will be located at the Ground Transportation Centers of Terminals A and B, with service extending throughout Waymo’s established San Francisco Bay service area.

This expansion builds upon Waymo’s existing presence at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the company reports is a highly frequented destination within its Phoenix metropolitan service area. The Phoenix operation provides a valuable case study, offering insights into operational logistics, rider behavior, and the integration of autonomous vehicles into existing airport infrastructure.

Beyond airport services, Waymo continues to aggressively extend its ride-hailing service in other key metropolitan areas across the U.S., including Austin, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. This multi-city strategy allows Waymo to gather diverse data on driving conditions, weather patterns, and customer demand, all crucial for refining its autonomous driving algorithms and optimizing its operational model.

Earlier this year, Waymo significantly broadened its San Francisco Bay Area service area by an additional 27 square miles, encompassing key cities like Mountain View, Palo Alto, and San Jose. This footprint expansion underscores Waymo’s commitment to scaling its operations and achieving broader market penetration.
